Malware intelligence analyst Chris Boyd told Wired UK that links of videos being spread on Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) are nothing more than a trap. People get influenced to watch such videos when they see social media sites claiming that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been found.

To make people watch these videos, some of the scammers claim that this news is being telecast on respected news organizations such as the BBC or CNN.

There are many ways such scams operate. One of them is by simply clicking the link in the email or posts that will eventually take the user to a website to view the video, but it will initially ask the user to install particular software which is actually a Malware.

Other variations of the scam include advertising fraud. Here, the scammer shows advertisements on the webpage where the fake news about the missing flight is displayed. Although this type of scam is less harmful, the advertisements shown on these sites can also be malicious. On clicking such ads users may unknowingly install malware on their computer. This malware installed on user’s computer will eventually help the scammer gain personal information of the user.

It is therefore important to be extra cautious. Some of the points to be considered by the users are:

• Be suspicious if you receive any message or email from unknown and untrusted sources.
• If you receive an email or social media message informing you about the news report or video of the missing flight. Just avoid it, as they could be malicious.
• Be cautious about clicking links or viewing video send through emails or on social media sites, unless you are completely confident about its content.
• If you are doubtful about the sender, simply delete the message.
• Avoid clicking on suspicious advertisements that look legitimate but are hard to believe, they could be malicious.
