These days Facebook is flooded with all sorts of videos, whether it is the latest wave of ice bucket challenge, celebrity videos or dancing pet cats. However, not all of us would like to watch all the videos that are posted in the news feed.
Earlier, FB users had to select the play button to play any uploaded videos. But now, Facebook has come up with a new auto-play feature that plays the videos posted in the news feeds automatically, without even clicking on the play button. However, for the videos to auto-play, the Facebook Smartphone app downloads the data of that video without the user’s permission, which means it can possibly increase the data usage if Wi-Fi is not activated.
Unless Smartphone users have changed their default settings, all of these videos will play automatically on Wi-Fi as well as on 3G and 4G networks. This new feature in Facebook can quickly use up the monthly mobile data package as it allows videos to play silently on the timeline and within the news feed.
Freddie Rivera says “This is extremely annoying. If I want the video to play, I will play it. I don’t really need you to decide for me which video plays and which doesn’t. Please make this a user-defined preference!”
The issue was flagged by consumer finance site MoneySavingExpert.com, which said it had “seen many complaints from people who have been stung with data bills after exceeding their monthly allowance and who believe it to be because of Facebook auto playing videos.”
Web Content Editor, Steve Nowottny at MoneySavingExpert.com said that ‘It’s worrying that Facebook is auto playing videos by default, as it’s clearly catching users out, with some claiming they’ve unknowingly exceeded their data limit and incurred extra charges as a result.
Fortunately, there are simple ways to solve this problem by disabling auto-play video on the Facebook app:
For iPhone user:
- Tap the “Settings” button and then scroll down and click “Facebook.”
- Click “Settings,” “Auto-play,” and then choose “Wi-Fi only” or “Off.”
For Android user:
- Log into Facebook app and go to your account settings.
- Click “App Settings,” and then choose ‘Auto-play only on Wi-Fi’ or ‘Off.’
