What a great Christmas gift for online gamers!
Thousands of online video gamers on the Christmas Eve were not able to access Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live gaming service. Both these services was said to be attacked using a DDoS attack, for which a hacker group- Lizard Squad claimed responsibility. Hackers who call themselves the ‘Lizard Squad’ affected nearly 160 million gamers by attacking Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation game consoles.
At the time of writing, Sony Corp’s PlayStation gaming network still remains offline, while rival Microsoft whose three Xbox platforms, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox, which faced the same attack, has fixed the problems at its Xbox Live. Meanwhile the PSN’s official Twitter support page tweeted that “Our engineers are continuing to work hard to resolve the network issues users have experienced today. Thanks for your continued patience!”
The attack on Sony’s PlayStation Network is being connected to Sony Pictures Entertainment hack that happened last month. This is because hackers of Sony Pictures had promised a ‘Christmas gift’ if the company proceeded with the release of movie The Interview, which has been made available online.
Changing its initial decision to cancel the release of “The Interview”, Sony released the movie through a small number of theatres and online services. Microsoft’s Xbox is one of its online platforms to watch the movie. Reports added, Microsoft’ Xbox Live network was attacked because it was selling/renting The Interview on demand.
So, are these attacks connected with Sony Pictures Entertainment hack?
Report says, Sony Pictures had suffered hacking attack last month in connection with the controversial film, “The Interview”. Later on, FBI linked the attack to North Korea, but it strongly denied the claim. Even if both the situation matches, there is no evidence that the cyber-attacks are connected with each other and we shall wait to see the real reason behind both the attacks.
Meantime, as Sony’s Playstation Network is down and few of the Xbox gamers are also unable to login and play, gamers are forced to stick with offline play until both the gaming systems get back online. Till then, maybe it will be better to spend some quality time with family during Christmas holidays 🙂
