With the acceptance of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), organizations allowed employees to bring their own devices, such as Smartphones, Tablets and laptops while using the company’s network. This was done with the aim to shift costs, increase productivity and provide convenience to employees.
However, being a personal device, organizations have no control over the kind of apps installed on the device. Employees download app from various places, including app stores or even third party websites. These apps may be infected and hence can pose a threat to other apps and data stored in the device.
Dionisio Zumerle, principal research analyst at Gartner says, “Enterprises that embrace mobile computing and bring your own device (BYOD) strategies are vulnerable to security breaches unless they adopt methods and technologies for mobile application security testing and risk assurance.”
He added, App stores are filled with applications that mostly prove their advertised usefulness. Nevertheless, enterprises and individuals should not use them without paying attention to their security. They should download and use only those applications that have successfully passed security tests conducted by specialized application security testing vendors.”
As the device contains applications that can access sensitive data or perform business functions, the security of such devices is a crucial issue. But “Most enterprises are inexperienced in mobile application security. Even when application security testing is undertaken, it is often done casually by developers who are mostly concerned with the functionality of applications, not their security.” said research analyst at Gartner.
In near future, Gartner predicts that 75% of mobile security breaches will be the result of mobile application misconfigurations. That is the misuse of personal cloud service through apps installed on Smartphones and Tablets. This will result in data leaks, risking the sensitive private data of the organization.
Researchers say that advanced security features offered by devices today will not be sufficient to keep breaches to a minimum. Gartner recommends that enterprises focus on data protection on mobile devices through usable and efficient solutions, such as application containment (via wrapping, software development kits or hardening).
