The notorious REvil Ransomware gang is back in news, and for all the wrong reasons. This time they have carried out a cyber-attack on the makers of apple products. However, they have mysteriously removed the apple schematics from their data leak site but only after privately warning Quanta about leaking the drawings for the new iPad and the new Apple logos.
Quanta, the Taiwan-based original design manufacturer (ODM) that helps manufacture the Apple Watch, Apple Macbook Air, and the Apple Macbook Pro suffered a cyberattack at the hands of REvil ransomware gang and as a part of this attack, the threat actors stole data belonging to the company, including drawings and schematics for Apple products.
REvil began posting schematics for Apple Macbooks on their data leak site since they didn’t receive any ransom from Quanta which had a starting price of $50 Million.
REvil also warned Apple itself that they should buy back the data by the 1st of May of they would be leaking more data. All as a part of the same cyberattack.
REvil is not known for going easy on its victims or for being compassionate towards them, hence it was baffling for security experts around the world to know that the ransomware gang removed the Quanta leak page, including Apple schematics and drawings, from their data leak site.
Since then, in a private chat with Quanta, REvil confirmed that they did hide the data leak page and will stop talking to reporters in order to allow the negotiations to progress.
REvil also added, “Having started a dialogue with us, you can count on a good discount.”
Along, with a deadline of 7th May 2021, they also reduced the ransom from $50 million to $20 million, as shown by the image below.
Since then, Quanta has been warned by REvil that they will begin to publish drawings for the “new iPad, new Apple logos” if no response is received from Quanta.
If REvil begins leaking data again, then we will be sure of what stance Quanta has taken against the demanded ransom. Until then it shall remain unknown if Quanta is in communication with REvil or if the negotiations have stalled.
