Google had informed 3 months earlier about the closing of Orkut on 30 September, 2014, the veteran social networking website. It was a very popular social networking site until others such as Facebook and Google+ came into existence. For Indians, Orkut was the first major social media network. People used to write testimonials, scraps, upload photos and even join communities. But, as facebook started getting popularity, people started shifting from Orkut to Facebook.
Eventually Orkut faded away and Facebook took over. However, many users have a lot of data stored on Orkut. Many of us are still trying to figure out how to take a backup of Orkut photos as well as the profile. If you were an active user on Orkut, had a popular community with many members and had shared a lot of photos which you want to preserve? Then here is what you should do.
- Go to the Google Takeout page.
- Click Choose services and then select Orkut.
- Click Create archive.
- When it’s ready, click download.
Moreover, NetTantra Technologies has come up with a Facebook app ‘HostMyOrkut’. This is a free application that will help you extract your Orkut data from an archive that you can download from Google. With this, you can relive your Orkut memories.
After downloading your data from Google Takeout, log on to the Facebook app and upload the archive that you earlier downloaded from Google. By doing this, the app creates an Orkut- like user interface which allows you to view and browse your profile in the same manner like Orkut.
If you do not want your posts or name to be included in the community archive, then you can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account as well. Please visit Google Help Center for any further details.
