A few hours ago Anonymous has started a new revolution on Internet called #OpPayPal in retaliation with the arrest of few Internet users who allegedly allowed their resources to be used for the LOIC – DDOS attack on PayPal a few months back. For more reading.
According to Anonymous around 50 users have already deleted their accounts within 10 mins of the start of #OpPayPal (On Tw1tter) and the remainder of the balance amount has been transferred / donated to charities.
If DDOS was a reminder then this is economic war or shall we say economic blockade. I wonder how is PayPal going to react to this en-masse rebuttal of their service.
When we look into this type of attack , what anonymous has achieved is economic blockade of some sorts for which there is no LAW which can indict them. They asked users to stop using PalPal and users accepted this and took the decision out-of-their own free-will. No one was killed, no web-site was down but people CHOSE in a democratic manner to stop using this service. No legal barriers broken – atleast in India.
Many decades ago, history has known and recorded the ideology of Non-Co-operation movement and it success.
Theoretically and logically this is a new beginning – DO NOT DDOS – just stop using the service.
Any future development, shall be posted and this post will be updated. Why ? In my real life I have seen various Socio-Economic agitations and movements but this is the first ever – started on Internet. This only proves that Internet has no boundaries and no Government but has been created by the people and for the people – issit it similar to what democracy stands for?
[UPDATE]
Anonymous and Lulsec statement.
[UPDATE]
That was super fast – PayPal doesnt allow Account Closure. Pity, I don’t have a PayPal Account to verify this, I normally rely on NEFT or DD or Cheques or Plain old Cash. Tried it once in the month of March but the idea of submiting my Credit Card No. to a third party forced me to close the paypal account sometime in the month of March 2011.
Wonder what would Paypal do, if everyone just started emptying their accounts and donated their balance to charity – is paypal going to force a minimum balance condition?
[UPDATE]
Now anonymous is going after PayPal affiliates. Wonder what would be Stage 2 and Stage 3? Trying to crash the Stock Value of EBAY. Wonder which law will be invoked for this action. But one thing is certain its going to be very very difficult for Law-makers to go in for a conviction.
[UPDATE]
Will be keeping a tab on stock market once they open up for trading.
[UPDATE]
Anonymous are also keeping a tab on the Stock Market. Now here is a small thought about the Stock – normally those who trade in shares are not driven by democratic ideologies but are hard-core capitalists.
As of this moment, I am battling paradoxes ( A and B ) about this situation in my mind and also trying to crack an encryption schema. But will keep this blog updated.
[FINAL UPDATE]
EBAY shares were down but this retaliation by Anonymous is sure an interesting “case study”. I think – a few years down the line, this event shall be used to understand Internet in a much better manner and hopefully better laws. Who will benefit? Service providers will end up providing a better service and governments will know how to govern Internet.
