The gaming industry is right at the forefront when it comes to the online entertainment industry. The density of video game players has increased since the dawn of the pandemic, which, in turn, has aroused the interest of cybercriminals.
What’s going on?
- The Polish gaming firm, CD Projekt Red, has announced being hit by a ransomware attack affecting its network. The perpetrators of the attack are known as HelloKitty, and they have already released the source code of Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and an unreleased version of Witcher 3.
- Bids were in increments of $500,000 at the auction for the source code that started at $1 million.
- Additionally, files regarding accounting, HR, admin, and investor relations were stolen by the hackers and claimed to release those in case of non-payment of the ransom.
The Threat Actors –
The first sample was obtained from the threat actors was in November 2020, since they are not very active. Processes associated with security software, backup software, database, and email servers, and accounting software are terminated by the malware. In total, it is capable of targeting Windows and 1,400 processes.
Additionally –
- An unknown attacker hacked the developer for Rise of Nations and DomiNations, Big Huge Games. The developer has claimed that no personal player data has been stolen, even though the attack has affected company data.
- In 2020, Capcom was targeted with a ransomware attack by RagnarLocker in which more than 1TB of confidential information was stolen.
Takeaway –
From the propagation of fraud and malicious attacks, the main motive of hackers behind these attacks is to make profits. The end goal is anticipated to be personal data because it can be leveraged for the execution of further attacks. Consequently, personal information should be protected at all costs.
