So what should we be worried about? Well, Facebook recently updated its Terms and Conditions which will be in effect from January 1, 2015. According to reports, the new Terms & Conditions of Facebook will now track GPS data of users from their devices such as smartphone and tablets.
Facebook also clears that there will be no opportunity to get rid of this. That means users need to delete or deactivate Facebook if they do not like the new conditions.
With the goal of accessing and making use of more and more user data, Facebook also collects information on every webpage the user visits while logged in. Now with the new conditions, Facebook will exactly know where the user is by tracking his/her GPS data. Moreover, a huge amount of user data can also be collected through Wi-Fi – which can also be used to locate people by the presence of nearby hotspots.
By accepting the new conditions, Facebook will also record data whether or not you are actively using it on your device. This may include network and communication data, including your IP address or mobile phone number. Other information may include your internet service, operating system, your current location, the type of device or browser you use, and also the websites you visit.
Facebook has responded to concerns over privacy, by saying “We only keep it until it is no longer useful to provide you services, like keeping your GPS coordinates to send you relevant notifications.”
However, the fact is, Facebook privacy policy clarifies the use of personal data of registered users. It clearly specifies what personal information is collected, how it is used, parties to whom this information may be disclosed, and the security measures taken to secure the information of users.
With regards to sharing of information with third parties, Facebook says that it makes the third party sign an agreement that holds it responsible for any misuse of personal information. However, Facebook offers thousands of third-party applications for its users to download. These third-party apps can access its user’s personal information that is further used by Facebook to personalize the advertisements on the basis of user’s profiles, their likings and interests.
But here is the question to ask, Is Facebook clearly benefiting advertisers and putting its user’s information at stake?
