Orkut was the first social networking venture of Google, but Orkut was dead a long time ago when Facebook came into the picture, and google+ was introduced. Over the past decade, Facebook, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, big time. Users across the world use these services for almost all kind of internet communicating needs. With the tremendous growth in these communities, Orkut has been outpaced, leaving no option but to close this ten year old service.
On June 30, 2014 Google announced to shutdown Orkut. Google said in a post on the Orkut blog that they have decided to focus their energy and resources on making the other social platforms to make them as amazing as possible for everyone who uses them.
With 50.6 percent users, Brazil had the highest percentage of Orkut members, followed by 20.44 percent came from India, while the US and Pakistan made 17.78 per cent and 0.86 per cent, respectively.
Now that Google has announced, Orkut’s farewell, users will not be able to create any new accounts on Orkut. Whereas, their data will remain available with Google till September 30 for the users to preserve it, using Google Takeout.
Nevertheless, to preserve Orkut account information, users can go to Google Takeout that will help them to download their account information in a single ZIP file containing HTML files and JPEG photos. You can download your photos, scraps received, your profile information, testimonials received and other activities. However, you can only download testimonials and scraps that you have received and their comments.
Know how you can download your Orkut account information:
- Go to the Google Takeout page.
- Click Choose services and then select Orkut.
- Click Create archive.
- When it’s ready, click download.
Google is storing archive of all public communities, which will be available online from September 30, 2014. If users do not wish their posts or name to be included in the community archive, they can remove Orkut permanently from their Google account. Please visit Google Help Center for any further details.
